Tracing the Lives Behind the Letters
"What is more moving: the meaning of important words or the trace left by their formulation, the sense of a precious document or the lines of ink that convey it?" 150 historical letters go up for auction.
being a practical person to begin with, I can see no value in owning documents. I've always felt that words are eternal if remembered. I feel more passion for a word scrawled on a dumpster with a stick than a letter or manifesto.
It sounds like an argument of semiotics, whats better, the signifier or the signified?
