Hmm... surprised no one has replied to this post yet. This is definitely a good read. This has been a huge topic lately in our classes. About the ethical issues when asking designers to compete for a job for free. This reminded me of Jake's post on face book bout a employer he got in touch with that was doing the same thing. It seems like this is going a lot all around us.
This also reminded me of Jake's problem with a potential client. Some clients choose to use graphic designers as if they're this weird hybrid between artists and contractor. Which in a way, I suppose we are. But we can't "bid" for a project without some sort of deposit or promise of a job. This is our livelihood, and if we're going to be freelancers, that's all we have to live on. We aren't large companies that can bid lower and lower. Graphic design is a trained art form and when we give people a price for how much a job is going to cost, people assume that we're just inflating costs. Graphic design is something that is important and valuable, and just think that some companies and the general public have yet to recognize that.
